Here is a little flashing detail I came up on my first @james_hardie job about 10 years ago. Hardie calls for a 2" gap between siding or trim and roof. The problem here is if you keep your siding 2" off the flashing and don't cap the bottom, snow can sit up against the wall and slowly wick in water.
